Early forecasts indicate the possibility that the District will be impacted by Hanna, which is expected to reach the District on Saturday. The storm may bring heavy rains and high winds. Residents are urged to review their family plan to be sure information is current and up-to-date. Among the points to consider are what you would do if you and your family members were separated or if an emergency occurred while your child was at school and your were at work. More information about how to make a plan is available at on line at http://eic.rrc.dc.gov/eic/cwp/view.asp?a=1272&q=567962&cat=2. Residents should also prepare an emergency kit that includes non-perishable food and water (one gallon per person per day) for at least 3 to 5 days. Medical supplies, a flashlight, a battery-powered radio and extra batteries, along with supplies for infants or pets should also be included. For additional information about how to make a kit, visit http://eic.rrc.dc.gov/eic/cwp/view.asp?a=1272&q=568088&cat=3. A battery- or crank-powered radio will help residents stay informed in the event of electrical outrages. Information will be available on all major media outlets, and on DC Cable Channel 13 and 16. Additional information about hurricanes and protective actions you can take can be viewed at the following site: http://dcema.dc.gov/dcema/frames.asp?doc=/dcema/lib/dcema/pdf/hazards/Factsheet-Hurricanes.pdf Sent by DC HSEMA to e-mail, pagers, cell phones Powered by the Roam Secure Alert Network ----------------------------------- - You received this alert because you are subscribed to Alert DC. Expected gusty winds are to play a part of this storm. Heavy rain associated with Tropical Storm Hanna will move north across the region Friday afternoon into Saturday. It appears at this time that the heaviest rains would fall late Friday night into early Saturday afternoon. This is largely dependent on the exact track of Hanna. However, along the path of this storm totals of 3 to 6 inches are expected. Latest flash flood guidance indicates that amounts of 3 to 4 inches in 3 hours or less will cause small streams and creeks to flow out of their banks. As always the models could change. But so many people have asked me who I am supporting in Ward 1 for party positions, thta I thought it would be helpful to put out this message. I encourage you to vote, most important of all. There will be al light turnout tomorrow, and yet these positions are significant. So please go and vote. Its confusing because all of the slates in the Dem Party have Obama in the name. So please note the specific slate name. Please support the Obama4UnityBeatsMcCain for the male members of the Ward 1 Democratic Committee (MARTINEZ AND BERRY). For the female members from Ward 1, one of the two candidates I will be voting for is ANITA BELLAMY SHELTON. For the at large Democratic State Committee members, our best bet is the OBAMA FOR CHANGE SLATE, headed by ANITA BONDS. I hope this is helpful. The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) is scheduled to install a new overhead sign on Interstate 395, at the Francis Case Memorial Bridge, on Friday, September 19, 2008. All of the work will be conducted overnight, between 9pm Friday and 4am Saturday, and will require the temporary closing of 2 northbound lanes. The detours are: Northbound: take 14th Street to Independence Avenue, make a right turn and then another right on 9th St. to access the 9th St. Tunnel and get back on the interstate. Southbound: take Exit 4 to Maine Avenue, make a right turn and follow the signs for southbound I-395. Motorists are encouraged to stay alert and use caution while traveling through the work zone. DDOT?s Roadway Operations Unit will assist in maintaining the safe flow of traffic in the area. The sign installation is part of an ongoing 18-month project to improve the signage along I-395. The Department of Parks and Recreation estimates the new park will open in summer 2009. Let me know if you would like to see a drawing of the new park. The renovation of Girard Park is the centerpiece of $4 million in funding I authored for the renovation and construction of parks along the 14th St corridor. The new Girard Park has something for everyone! It will feature new tables for our regular chess, checkers, and bid whist players! It will also have a raised, rubber surface basketball court for our young people. And finally, for those who want to relax or read a book, a plaza area with chairs and a water fountain will be located in the heart of the park. There will be two restroom facilities that will be regularly secured and cleaned by DPR and the Green Team. At night, the park will be secured by a fence. The fence features a retractable gating system that will close at night and present a wide open, inviting appearance during the day. This has been a long process but a necessary one. In the end, we will have a beautiful new park. But just as importantly, neighbors who held strong, differing opinions about the park in the past are now working together for its future success. Thanks to all who participated in this process! I want to commend all the residents who committed time and effort into this, and Department of Parks and Recreation Director Clark Ray and his staff.
