This crew (or gang) is a violent drug and crime organization, responsible for as many as 42 violent crimes throughout DC including six homicides and many armed robberies. Some 200 officers culminated a six month investigation this morning with ten arrested (two juveniles) and 11 search warrants in the 200 to 400 block of W Street. Fine work by MPD detectives, police officers and the US Attorney. DC Housing Authority police were also engaged. Those blocks have been seriously troubled with crime, including recent homicides. This action comes as a a sure relief to these problems surrounding the Kelly Miller housing complex. There is no substitute for this kind of highly effective police action. But we are also working on the social roots of all this crime. For example, I am supporting the LeDroit Community and its ANC representatives in their highly organized effort to place a pre K school in a portion of the soon to be empty Gage Eckington School right in the neighborhood. We truly need to more effectively address these root causes of crime at an early age. And there are lots of kids in this area. But for the moment, our congratulations and gratitude goes to the Mayor and Chief Lanier and all who contributed to this splendid work. Fenty announced today that the District has released its final draft of the Pedestrian Master Plan. The plan is a culmination of 18 months worth of study that examined all aspects of the District's pedestrian environment. The detailed planning process included extensive agency and community stakeholder involvement through a Technical Advisory Committee, an online survey, focus group meetings, field surveys in specific corridors and a citywide public meeting. Last year, 25 pedestrians were struck and killed in the District. In 2008, 9 pedestrians have been struck and killed to date. "The District is committed to making streets safer for pedestrians," said Mayor Fenty. "The Pedestrian Master Plan recommends new traffic safety policies and roadway improvements to meet that goal." The goal of the plan is to reduce the number of pedestrians killed and injured in crashes with motor vehicles and to increase pedestrian activity by making walking a comfortable and accessible mode of travel. Summary of Pedestrian Master Plan Recommendations ? Improve Access and Safety at Signalized Crossings and Intersections - Improvements recommended at intersections throughout the District with significant pedestrian activity. * Improve Access and Safety at Uncontrolled Crossings and Intersections - A major focus of the plan is to improve safety of pedestrians crossing at locations without a stop sign or traffic signal. * Implement Improvements to the Eight High-priority Study Corridors - Study corridors improvements include: sidewalk repair and construction, relocation of bus stops, signalization changes, enhanced crosswalks, and reduced crossing distances at intersections. * Provide sidewalks on both sides of all streets - The city will refine its system for identifying needed sidewalks, inspecting sidewalks, and identifying and cataloging needed repairs. * Improve pedestrian access and safety at bus stops while maximizing transit efficiency. * Revise the DDOT Design and Engineering Manual - This revision will address pedestrian needs, specifically incorporating best-practice revisions identified in the master planning process. * Increase penalties for motorists for infractions that impact pedestrian safety - The current fine in the District of Columbia for failing to yield the right-of-way to pedestrians is $50.00. In addition to increased fines, offenders of infractions hindering pedestrian safety should receive points on their license. * Expand the District's Photo Radar Speeding Reduction Program - Motorists exceeding posted speed limits present hazards for pedestrians by increasing the frequency and severity of crashes and reducing the comfort of pedestrians walking along the street. * Expand Pedestrian Safety Campaign Effort - Content of the materials should inform pedestrians as well as motorists and may include: ? Laws ? Rules of the road ? Street crossing safety ? Pedestrian visibility to drivers at night ? Stopping for pedestrians in crosswalks ? Yielding to pedestrians while turning at signalized intersections ? The relationship between vehicle speeds and the severity of pedestrian injury * Conduct an Educational Campaign on the Benefits of Walking * Expand the Implementation of the Safe Routes to School Program The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will schedule public comment meetings in June to discuss the strategies of the Pedestrian Master Plan. The meetings are planned to be held in Wards 3, 6 and 7 and will be open to all District Residents. The Pedestrian Master Plan is scheduled to be implemented over 10 years at a total cost of over $18 million. ### -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Government wishes to advise the public of street closings and parking restrictions in conjunction with the 2008 NATIONAL MEMORIAL DAY PARADE. The event will take place on Monday, May 26, 2008, along Constitution Avenue, NW. The parade is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. and end at approximately 4:30 p.m. Streets along the PARADE ROUTE will be closed until the conclusion of this event. The specific details surrounding the event are listed below. PARADE ROUTE: The parade will begin at 7th Street and Constitution Avenue, NW, and proceed westbound along Constitution Avenue before ending at 18th Street and Constitution Avenue, NW. At that point, the parade will proceed northbound along Virginia Avenue, NW, into the dispersal area. STREET CLOSURES: Streets along the PARADE ROUTE will be closed to traffic beginning at approximately 1:15 p.m. today until its completion. 7th Street, NW, between Constitution Avenue, NW, and Independence Avenue, SW, is already closed to traffic. PARKING RESTRICTIONS: There will be no parking along the parade route on Constitution Avenue, NW, between 7th Street, NW, and 23rd Street, NW. There will also be no parking on Virginia Avenue, NW, between Constitution Avenue, NW, and 23rd Streets, NW. These restrictions are in effect from now until 5:00 p.m. Motorists may experience delays if they are traveling in the area of this event. The Metropolitan Police Department and the D.C. Department of Transportation recommend that motorists use extreme caution when traveling in the downtown area this weekend as pedestrian traffic could be extremely heavy with respect to several Memorial Day related events. Travelers are encouraged to use Metro. All closures are subject to unanticipated changes. The evidence shows that new commerce is thriving in Columbia Heights--and transit use is part of the key. Before the Target opened, residents were concerned about how all the new shoppers would affect their neighborhood--some feared widespread auto gridlock. Lots of people *are* traveling to the store. The store's opening day had the second highest sales of all Target stores in the country. Thankfully, many of them are riding Metro or walking. Metro riders at Columbia Heights have increased 24% during weekdays compared to the previous year. On weekends, the number is up to 39%. Surely some of this relates to the high cost of gasoline, and a general switch to public transportation. But, the retail center has a 1,000 car garage. The garage still hasn't reached capacity. On average, only 250 cars are there. During peak hours, 350-400 cars are there. In fact, the second level has not been used to date. Also, 25% of the new Target employees live right here in Ward One--80% overall live in DC. With fewer employees needing to drive in, parking is more available.
