Message-ID: Dear Friends, what a pleasure it is to report that on Wednesday, on the first day of the "soft opening", the Columbia Heights Target had the SECOND highest gross of any Target in the country. This weekend the crowds were overwhelming. I am anxious to know what the sales results are. We are managing the traffic, it seems like a great many people are doing what we hoped---they are walking, or taking public transit. We will be checking into the transit numbers as well. What we believed has proven true, there is a great pent up interest in shopping in DC rather than having to go outside our boundaries. And that is good news for local prosperity! We had some very nice events over the weekend, opening the retail center. It was great to see our Mayor, Adrian Fenty, cut the ribbon on Saturday officially opening the Center! Antonio Michael Richardson of 907 Emerson St, NW was arrested Monday morning by the Metro Transit Police Department. He is being charged with five armed robberies at the Columbia Heights Metro Station. Cameras at the station had a visual that led to his arrest. Congratulations to the Metro Transit Police and MPD, who also played a key role, for their fine police work. Bests, Councilmember Jim Graham *PREVIOUS MESSAGE* Dear Friends: Last Friday, I requested action by MPD and the Metro Transit Police Department (MTPD) to address the recent robberies at the Columbia Heights Metrorail station. Investigation by MTPD detectives has led to the identification of a suspect, who was arrested this morning. The suspect has been implicated in all of the recent robberies at the station and remains in custody. Though a juvenile, he will be charged as an adult. MTPD detectives have been in contact with MPD detectives to determine whether this suspect is involved in additional robberies in the Columbia Heights neighborhood. Typically, there is a pattern that comes to an end with an arrest such as this. I'm sure you share my sense of relief that this arrest has been made, and we can all hope that life will return to normal for Metro customers and other Columbia Heights residents. About 200 people have been displaced. Metro buses were brought in to keep people warm before moving everyone to the Columbia Heights Community Center at 15th and Girard St, NW. We have been working with the residents all morning to attend to their human needs. Low-income residents were the highest affected.
