Temperatures in the mid- to lower-90s are forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday before the midday high drops back to near 88? on Thursday of next week. The Heat Index is forecast to reach 105 degrees on Saturday, and may approach 110 degrees on Sunday and Monday. National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory and an Excessive Heat Watch. If you must go outside over the weekend, please seek public areas, libraries, museums, and malls to cool off. The Department of Human Services? hyperthermia hotline ? 1-800-535-7252 ? also will be activated. Residents are asked to call the hotline if they observe people on the street who are in distress as a result of the excessive heat. The department?s hyperthermia van will pick up persons in distress and take them to a shelter. Hot weather early in the season can have a more significant impact on vulnerable segments of the population because they have not yet adjusted to warmer temperatures. This includes the elderly, infants and young children, the chronically ill and those taking certain medications. HSEMA Director Darrell Darnell said residents should limit their outdoor activities today and take precautions to ensure they are not adversely affected by the extreme heat. ?In addition to taking steps to keep themselves safe during the extreme heat, residents also should be sure to check on elderly relatives and neighbors and remember to bring their pets inside,? he noted. Other recommended precautions include: ? Turn on an air-conditioner or fan ? DO NOT leave children or pets in vehicles ? Drink plenty of water ? Wear light-colored, lightweight and loose fitting clothes ? If you must go outside, apply sunscreen at least 20 minutes before going out ? Limit exposure to the sun (the sun is most powerful between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.) ? Avoid alcoholic drinks and caffeinated beverages. The District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority (WASA) and the Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services are reporting low water pressure in some neighborhoods due to unauthorized opening of fire hydrants by residents seeking relief from the heat. The public is reminded that unauthorized use of hydrants is illegal. Such activity will cause low water pressure and service problems for customers and can damage the underground water infrastructure. Loss of adequate water pressure can have a negative impact on fire fighting when firefighters are unable to get enough water to suppress fires. Opening hydrants also poses a safety issue for young children who could easily be hurt from the high water pressure. Over the last three days, most of the 20-plus locations of reported open hydrants have been in Southeast Washington. Other locations identified were in the southwest and northeast areas of the District. WASA has had to bring in additional crews to respond to low pressure problems caused by hydrant openings. The public is urged to report open hydrants by calling the WASA 24-hour emergency line at (202) 612-3400. From Jim at grahamwone.com Tue Jun 24 20:28:17 2008 From: Jim at grahamwone.com (Jim Graham) Date: Tue, 24 Jun 2008 17:28:17 -0700 Subject: [CH-Discussion] Great News on Meridian Hill/Malcolm X Park Rehab Message-ID: Dear Friends, I am very pleased to share with you the report below from Adrienne Coleman, National Park Service, on the solid progress on our great park and fountain. I want to congratulate Ms. Coleman and all who worked with her on the splendid achievement to date. Please pass this along. Bests, Councilmember Jim Graham Here is her message: The contractor did not properly grade the lawn areas on the upper level. Consequently, water was puddling on the lawn rather than draining off as it should, So, we insisted that the contractor regrade and reseed the lawn areas. Unfortunately, this delayed the opening of the lawn areas. But we needed to hold the contractor to his contractual obligations. At this writing, the regrading of the lawn areas has been completed and the lawn areas have been reseeded. The grass needs to take hold, though, before the park takes occupancy of the lawn areas from the contractor. Otherwise, we'll just have a muddy (or dusty) mess where grass should be as the public uses the lawn. The grass may be green now, but the blades are very fine and are not filled in. Grass will not stand stand up to use until it becomes more established. We're hoping to be able to open the south lawn by July 4. The grass on the north lawn, however, has not taken hold as quickly as the south lawn. We'll open the north lawn as soon as the grass is more established. And that is weather-dependent. In the meantime, all of the other infrastructure work neded to improve drainage on the upper level has been completed. The most severely damaged walkways have been repaired or replaced, damaged sections of the park's historic concrete walls have been repaired, and new landscaping installed. Work on the lodge house is nearing completion. We hope you've noticed that the fountains are working beautifully. It's been a long process to get the system working properly. Even though we have a new pump, the system works on gravity and getting it to work at the level that it is now has been a major feat. Some of the water features that are working now haven't worked in over ten years, such as the gargoyles at the bottom of the cascades. We appreciate everyone's patience. This has taken longer than anyone anticipated. It's a complex park with antiquated systetms that have required extra time and specialized expertise to repair. But we have a much improved park for everyone to enjoy. Sincerely, Adrienne Coleman Superintendent, Rock Creek Park National Park Service I typically answer emails before 9 AM on weekdays.
