Central Union Mission Not Going to GA Ave Message-ID: Dear Friends: Good news!!! Central Union Mission is not moving to Georgia Avenue in Ward One. It is moving downtown. We have re-defined the project to include real progress for lower Georgia Avenue. Instead of a 170-bed men's shelter on the 3500 block of Georgia Avenue, there will now be mixed-income housing. This is a solid victory for grassroots activism. I worked with the neighborhood, who came together to send a very effective message that a homeless shelter was not the kind of improvement we wanted. I joined Mayor Fenty this afternoon for a press conference to announce that the Mission had signed an agreement to move to 65 Mass. Ave. Congratulations to everyone involved, especially the Georgia Avenue residents, local ANC, Georgia Avenue Redevelopment Defense Squad and the Pleasant Plains Civic Association! And a special thanks to Mayor Fenty and his fine team. Bests, Councilmember Jim Graham -- I typically answer emails before 9 AM on weekdays. Over 70 buildings are identified in the lawsuit. Ward One properties include: - 2401 Ontario Rd - 2359 Ontario Rd - 1636 Kenyon St - 1630 Park Rd - 3145 Mt. Pleasant St - 3514 13th St - 2603 11th St - 646 Newton St - 1420 Perry Pl - 1825 Kilbourne Pl - 1401 Oak St - 613 Gresham Pl Among the defendants, Rufus Stancil, Eric Kretschman, and Vincent Abell, are notorious examples of slumlords. They purposely allow their properties to deteriorate to dangerous and unhealthy living conditions to evict their tenants. I have been battling them for years. Mayor Fenty's action today will send a strong message to these slumlords. Clean up your act or face the consequences. The lawsuit asks the court to appoint receivers to manage and repair some of the buildings. The receiver would collect the rent on behalf of the owner and use the funds to make needed repairs. If the rent is not enough to cover the repairs, the District would ask the court to order the owner to pay the difference. If the owner does not comply they can be fined or jailed. After literally years of delay, predating the current Mayor, the Fenty Administration has worked out final details of a key land swap with Howard University had been completed. What is thsi about? Its about a building right in the middle of a long block between V and Barry Place on Ga Avenue which was owned by DC, and which Howard University needed for its development. It was a key "missing tooth" right in the center of the Howard plan. For years, thsi was held up by litigation and then by discussions over the value of that building, and the proposed Howard University land to be swapped located on Sherman Avenue which, if memory severs me, is about 60,000SF of ground. The agreement is now struck. DC gets the parcel on Sherman (for development as mixed use, including a substantial set aside for affordable housing) and Howard gets the "tooth" it needs for its ambitious and important Town Center porject. Thus, we can now be insured that major development will occur with what today are empty buildings and vacant land. One can readily see how of thsi connects into the development on Florida Avenue, Howard Theater and the Broadcast One Center on 7th Street....all in that area. Reversal Message-ID: Dear Friends: * * The Committee on Public Works and the Environment voted 3-2 today to cut local funding to re-open Klingle Rd. I will hold a public roundtable on May 8 to allow public comment. The roundtable will be held at 6:30pm at the historic John A. Wilson Building. I am disappointed by the Committee's action today. The decision to remove funding and not open Klingle Rd. should only be made after maximum opportunity for public comment. The Council voted to re-open the road in 2003 with the use of federal funding. For the past two or three years the Federal government has obstructed the project through a series of delays. To move the project forward, Mayor Fenty proposed to use $2 million of local money in this year's budget to start the project. The city would then use the Federal money for other projects across the city. The Committee voted against the Mayor's plan today and passed a recommendation to not open Klingle Rd. at all. I disagree with the Committee for making this substantial change without public notice. The public must be allowed to weigh in on these important decisions.
