Message-ID: Dear Friends: I'm sure many people were inconvenienced by a MPD blockade of 16th St, NW today. I want you to have an explanation. MPD received a call from someone claiming to have a gun this afternoon on the 2400 block of 16th St, NW. He threatened to shoot the police when they arrived. MPD immediately responded, canvassed the block and secured the area by re-routing traffic. No one was found with a gun and the call is now being investigated. This was a high priority call that required a serious response for the safety of our community. Bests, Councilmember Jim Graham -- I typically answer emails before 9 AM on weekdays. I have been in close consultation with the National Park Service and the Washington Parks and People throughout the five year, $6.2 million project. Yesterday, I received the firm commitment from the NPS the project is on schedule and will be completed in the Spring 2008. Unfortunately, the grass panels on the top level will be closed until that time. The project is being completed in 3 phases. The first phase is complete. The pipes and pumping systems in all the fountains were repaired or replaced. This work has restored the magnificent cascading fountain. Benches throughout the park were also repaired and replaced. Phase 2 is underway. The police lodge is being restored along with the construction of new public restrooms on the top level. Repairs to the walkways and the retaining wall along 16th Street are also being completed. Most prominently the drainage problems under the large grass panels on the top level are being addressed. Phase 3 which will start soon will bring new shrubs and trees along the mall area of the park. Soon, this great landmark and community asset will be fully restored. Her name has not been released as yet. A suspect is known and sought at this hour. The two women knew each other, and this has all the earmarks of a targeted shooting. It may have been a domestic quarrel. The victim may have been a Safeway employee. Both women are African American. One shot was fired. No further details are available at this time.
