That little commercial corridor is about to explode. Have you seen the crowds at Red Rocks? Also it returns the neighborhood to its previous appearance; there used to be a "Safeway" where the new Deli is at the corner of Lamont and 11th and the area sort of fits the style of the organic store while only two blocks from the Giant... They look very similar to the Henry's Organic Grocery Store in California. Very successful chain that supports local growers and organic produce. If I'm right that Ellenwood and Henry's are similar style stores, this would be a very positive thing for Columbia Heights. This style of store offers such a unique product selection that customers will come from all over the city to get the things that they will only have to offer. It might even draw customers away from the WF clientele that go down to P street. I'm sure they could turn the huge footprint in DCUSA to a combination store/public space for farmer's markets and other health events. R/Gus Rutogether wrote: DCist interviewed a spokesperson for the grocer, the ARE interested in coming to columbia Heights, specifically DC USA http://dcist.com/2007/07/26/organic_grocery.php Organic Grocery Store to Columbia Heights? After some Columbia Heights residents raised a stink about the discount retailers at the DC USA shopping center and campaigned in vain for a Whole Foods, there's something they can be happy about: an organic grocery store, Richmond-based Ellwood Thompson's, could be coming to the neighborhood in 18 months. While the Express' FreeRide blog said the store will only move into an eco-friendly Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (or LEED) certified building, we contacted company spokesperson Lesley Johnson, who told us that "Ellwood Thompson?s preference is to be located in a green or LEED-certified building, but we will consider other locations in Columbia Heights if a green development isn?t available." When asked about the DC USA shopping center at 14th and Irving Streets NW, which appears not to be LEED-certified, she said "We?ve seen the DC USA site. It?s a great location and we?re definitely interested." She added the store is looking to rent and probably would not build their own facility. Johnson also said "we've heard some mention of" the residents' campaign for a Whole Foods. The store, which has only one location in Richmond, carries mostly organic produce and tries to purchase from local farmers and suppliers. It carries free-range and organic meat and doesn't carry products with certain chemicals or high-fructose corn syrup. When asked to compare the store with other grocery stores, Johnson cited the "ease of shopping" at Trader Joe?s and the "focus on freshness and quality" of Whole Foods. Just browsing the store's website, it reminds us of an organic version of Rodman's or a super-size Yes! or My Organic Market. The Ellwood Thompson's, My and Yes! websites are so similar because they're all hosted by the same company. Johnson said Thompson's should have a new website in a month or so. So, Columbia Heightsters, is this what you were looking for? --- In columbia_heights at yahoogroups.com, Rutogether wrote: > > This was posted on columbia Heights news. > > Anyone else hear anything about this? Since I'm a BIg lover of natural foods and feel that a natural market is a plus in our neighborhoods, I'm putting this information out. Plus, good food fuels good art, doesn't it. At least it gets you in a good spot to create the work. > > Ellwood Thompson's Local Market operates a full service grocery store in Richmond, VA. They are recently focusing on the Columbia Heights area because they like the diversity and density of the area and believe that people in this area of DC would appreciate the unique experience of their concept. Ellwood Thompson's is committed to supporting local farmers, manufactures and other local merchants. ET would gladly sponsor local farmers markets. Additionally they have a strong commitment to the environment and ideally would like to be in a "Leeds" certified or "Green" concept building. > > They welcome any comments from you, my readers. > > Their website is www.ellwoodthompsons.com - (They are in the process of upgrading their site but this gives you some idea about them.) > > Contact: Ryan Youngman, CEO > Ryanyoungman at ... > Ellwood Thompson Local Market > 2235 Staples Mill Road > Suite 202 > Richmond, VA. 23230 > Check out the Columbia Heights website at http://www.columbiaheights.com _______________________________________________ CH-Discussion mailing list CH-Discussion at columbiaheights.com http://lists.columbiaheights.com/listinfo/ch-discussion To unsubscribe: Go to the URL listed above, enter your e-mail address in the field at the bottom of the page, and click the "Unsubscribe or Edit Options" button. Surely there is some available space in the nearby 11th street or Petworth neighborhood that could accommodate their theater space needs as well? Don't we have a couple underused, if not actually surplus firehouses in the neighborhood? I'm sort of amazed that Donatelli didn't try to snatch this up for the commercial space at either their Columbia Heights or Petworth buildings. Ruppert confirmed in an interview today that he and his mother Molly have ?signed a letter of intent? for the former Bi-Rite supermarket space just two blocks up from the Wonderland Ballroom at 3400 11th St. NW. Negotiations are ongoing, but if all goes as hoped, Columbia Heights could soon be home to the Warehouse?s restaurant, bar, and live music venue. ?It?s definitely not a done deal, but we?re excited,? Ruppert says. According to Ruppert, he?s drawn to the ?flavor? of the neighborhood. He likes the community feel, he says, and thinks it would be a good fit for the Warehouse because ?a lot of our customers live up there.? In April, the Rupperts announced that, faced with skyrocketing property taxes, they might be forced to close the 7th Street NW arts complex. On July 30, they closed their music venue, but they plan to reopen the theater space and continue fine arts events after an August hiatus. Ruppert says he and his mother are still scouting spots for the Warehouse?s other components. ?We have no long-term plans at the moment,? he says. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... "I grew up on the Jersey Shore, which has a lot of pizza history," says the 39-year-old Washington entrepreneur and musician. He's also lived in New York and New Haven, Conn., cities known for their "high standards of pizza." Buy This Photo His band gigs are on hold when James O'Brien is at RedRocks, his new pizzeria on Park Road NW. (By Bill O'leary -- The Washington Post) These days, O'Brien is a regular presence at RedRocks (1036 Park Rd. NW; 202-506-1402), the latest in a batch of fresh pizza sources around Washington and the latest in a crop of new places to eat in Columbia Heights. The former owner of Staccato Lounge in Adams Morgan, which he sold last year, O'Brien isn't relying only on fond memories to make sure his signature dish hits the spot with discerning customers. Edan MacQuaid, a former employee of 2 Amys and Pizzeria Paradiso, is tending RedRocks' Italian-made, wood-burning brick oven. The new pizza parlor unfolds on two floors of a renovated townhouse that is simply dressed with hardwood floors, exposed-brick walls, a small granite-topped bar and tables that O'Brien and friends built themselves. Outside is a patio; the basement holds the kitchen. Until an interior stairwell is finished, servers are required to walk outside to ferry orders from downstairs to the multiple dining areas. The arrangement is amusing until there's a mix-up and food has to be returned. (Our entrees came within minutes of ordering, followed shortly thereafter by our appetizers.) The focus is pizza, but you don't have to eat crust to fuel up here. The kitchen also makes bruschetti, panini, salads and a handful of main courses, including a roast fish of the day and golf ball-size meatballs served on runny polenta. And the bar pours refreshing chasers in the form of Chimay Triple and Allagash White beers on tap -- among RedRocks' 30 or so available suds. A guitar player and singer with a seven-piece band, O'Brien doesn't plan to feature live music in his new restaurant. "I'm bartending, hosting -- doing a little bit of everything," he explains. But the name of his group could be applied to our early encounter with the headliner on the menu: O'Tasty. Sandwiches and entrees, $6.95- $14.95. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... (Steak and Eggs does not serve alcohol.) He was transferred to a local hospital where he died. According to police report, the killing occurred after an argument with another person. There is an MPD crime camera at 9th and T, and it is being downloaded for possible evidence. This 24 hour restaurant is notorious and dangerous. I am including in this email a prior email string (which I have edited) for the shootings that occurred here in March of thsi year. At that time, two men were shot and wounded in this restaurant. It has long been the subject of neighborhood concern and complaint concerning drug use and what is clearly a magnet for violence. Cmdr McCoy then detailed the significant number of police calls to thsi address (see below). Following the March shooting, it was shut down for a period of days. But has since reopened, apparently under this new name of Joe's Restaurant. In an email (see below) dated March 20, I called upon DC Attorney General Singer to examine whether the drug nuisance law could be used to close the place down. (Ms Singer, what happened to that request?) I am repeating that call for action now, and also including the DCRA Director, Linda Argo, to review and revoke the certificate of occupancy. There may even be a criminal pattern here, of the shooter waiting for persons to arrive and then entering the business to shoot them...since that is what appears to have happened thsi morning and back in March. We need to take action before there is even more violence at this location. Bests Councilmember Jim Graham -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... There are three distinct audiences for these tips - children and youth themselves, parents and teachers/other adults who work with kids. These tips are gleaned from those developed by medical and law enforcement professionals and advocates. The tips are on-line at www.dckids.org - check in THE LATEST for the three one-pagers. And a big "thank you" to the office of Councilmember Harry "Tommy" Thomas, Jr. for suggesting we pull these together! From joan.rajah at verizon.net Tue Aug 28 18:53:38 2007 From: joan.rajah at verizon.net (Joan RAJAH) Date: Tue, 28 Aug 2007 18:53:38 -0400 Subject: [CH-Discussion] Harriet Tubman Elementary School Message-ID: <004801c7e9c6$46273700$8591fea9@b5d81c168> Saturday, August 25, 2007 a team of people from various community organizations including the 3rd precinct substation on Park Road, NW, Target, and the church of Christ, 13th St. joined in a "beautification" project. It included painting, setting up the library, and planting. On, Sunday, August 26, 2007 people ignored the fence and took their dogs onto the front lawn to play and use the bathroom. Now, I know they pay taxes and their taxes help pay for public schools. But, so do most of the parents who have family members attending that school. And, they would like for the kids to go to a school with an environment conducive to learning which also means sanitary. If you take your dog in, take the poop out! And, keep them off of the plants. The Irving Street side doesn't have a fence. Oh, I guess that means your dog might run loose. Aren't they supposed to have a leash? I know there's a lot of love for dogs. I have one. But, humans, kids, come first. Joan -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I oppose such a change without further consultation and community input. I am concerned by such a significant change without comprehensive community input from Ward One, which shares boundaries with two significant business corridors. There is not an ANC resolution in Ward One to support this change and there is significant opposition from local businesses on U St, who are concerned about breaking up a significant business corridor. While the Chief and I share the same goals; solve crimes quickly and ensure the safety of her officers; I am not convinced moving PSA 306 is the only way to accomplish this. I remain supportive of Chief Lanier and have enjoyed a positive personal and professional relationship with her for many years. I call upon the Chief, therefore, to hold at least one Community Forum in Ward One before the implementation of this plan. Bests, Councilmember Jim Graham -- I typically answer emails before 9 AM on weekdays. If you email me after that, it is likely that you will hear from me the next weekday. If there is a need to communicate prior to that, you may wish to call me. Jim Graham, Councilmember, Ward One, 1350 Pa. Ave., NW, #105, Washington, DC 20004. 202-724-8181; 202-724-8109 (fax).
